Title: Titanic News Article
Preservice Teacher: Jane Fuscellaro and Anthony Germani
Grade Level/Subject: 4th Grade/ Writing / Social Studies
This Web quest will introduce the history of Titanic while students also get to work on writing skills.
Objectives:
· Student will be able to write a descriptive new paper article.
· Student will be able to research accurate information and record their finding
Time Frame: An hour a day, over a few days
Instructions for Teacher:
· Previous to the web quest, children have learned juicy words, persuasive writing, and how to research information. This assignment is putting all this together for students to complete.
· Teacher will break students up into four cooperative learning groups. If there are not enough children there can be groups of three or less. No more than four students per group.
· Students will each split up into their groups and each will choose a mission to complete.
· The groups will follow the instructions for their mission on the web quest in order to research their topic. They will do this individually.
· After students have worked on their individual missions, they will come together putting their paragraphs together to create a news article. The students will have to add an introduction and conclusion. They will have to mix and match their paragraphs, add transitions, and juicy descriptions to create a powerful news article.
· The teacher will supervise the students throughout the activity. Teacher will make sure students stay on task. The teacher will offer assistance as needed.
· Once students finish their news article, they will transfer it to the provided final copy and create a picture.
· Each group will present their news article in front of the class with a projector
· At the end of this titanic, teacher will give out ‘tickets’ for students to ride on the titanic. The ticket has the name of a passenger on it.
· A follow up activity would be for students to research the name on their ticket and write an brief essay talking about who they are, what class, and if they survived the titanic.
